This exam is usually used for doing MBA from various IITs. This exam has some high end questions in Math and that has been the USP of this entrance. The number of seats in each of the IITs is given below, along with probable cut-offs of the written scores of last year. It usually gives out ranks for each of the individual IITs based on the scores obtained in the written exam. One has to apply separately to different IITs as they do not send calls for the personality assessment round on their own.

The pattern of JMET in 2009 was same as in the previous year i.e. 120 questions and 180 minutes. Each correct answer carried 1 mark while each wrong answer carried a penalty of 0.25 marks. It must be highlighted that as many as 10-12 questions in the entire test paper had errors with DI section taking the maximum share of those errors. The section-wise breakup of questions for JMET-09 is presented below:

The passages were short but difficult to comprehend. Most of the questions were direct and could be solved by the elimination of the choices. Out of the given 14 questions, one could have easily attempted 10 questions and got nearly 8-9 correct. From the other sections, one could have got the vocabulary based questions correct. The questions on Grammar, which tested knowledge on Reported speech and the questions on sentence correction were easy. The contextual meaning questions, and the spelling based questions were easy. The number of correct attempts could have been 8-9 in the verbal ability sub-section. The total correct attempts could have been 17-18 in a span of 40 mins, with a minimum net score of 16-17.

The topics ranged from simple percentage questions to linear programming, differential calculus and probability. The questions on Calculus were easy. The other topics from which the questions could have been attempted were respectively 3 from Geometry and Mensuration, 2 each from P&C , Time and speed and 1 each from Graphs, Higher degree equation, Function, Number system, Percentage and Ratio. With a little more common sense one could have attempted more questions of Arithmetic and Geometry. The total number of correct attempts could have been 17-19 in time span of 50 mins, with a minimum net score of 15-16.
The Data Matching sets and the Blood relation sets were moderately difficult while the rest of the questions were of easy to medium level of difficulty. The questions on deductive reasoning were from Statement Conclusion, Logical Deduction and If-Else types. The questions on Inductive Reasoning were from Strong and Weak arguments, Assumptions and Conclusions and Miscellaneous single liners. There were some easy questions, including the one on Coding- Decoding, Statements & Conclusions and Jumbled Paragraphs which should have been attempted. A good attempt would have been 21 questions in the time limit of 45 minutes with a possible score of 16+.

The Data Interpretation questions were for the most part quite straightforward and could have been solved by simple observation. One of the sets had all wrong answers. The sets on tables, bar graph and line graph should have been attempted. A good attempt would have been 22-24 questions in the time limit of 45 minutes with a possible score of 20+.
An analysis of all the sections with the number of doable questions is given below for ready reference.

Since the cut-offs have been around 65-70% of the maximum marks for good institutes (IIT-B, D and K), the attempts have to be maximised in order to be on the safe side. The suggested strategy could be to allocate 40 mins in each of the 4 sections followed by a 20 min time allocation to your strong section in order to maximize your score.
